Point One

Writing the Scene at Plot Point One

Writing Academically (Part VIII): Wrapping Things Up | Princeton ...

This is the hot action spot that ends Act One. It is the section that wraps the action put in place by your setup and shoves the rest of the story into Act Two. Plot point one is a way of shifting the mood of the story and the way it progresses. Tracking your chain of events will help you develop that moment further. Pace and tone changes can occur when you close Act One and open the curtain to Act Two. It can be as simple or as complicated as a location change. Keep that in mind as you wrap one act to open another.

Social distancing & masks

Hello my lovelies. How are you this glorious day? Yes, I am aware it is Monday. No, I have not lost what is left of my twisted mind. It is securely in place. I just want to know how everyone is doing. Are you venturing out of your house?  Are you sticking your toe in the water to see if you are ready to jump out there? I have gone out- with masks. I have found that people are still pretty nasty and hide behind the cover of their masks. Don’t think I won’t follow you out to your car and stare at you while you load your groceries, Karen. Just be nice. We are all stuck in this crap-storm together.

But I will remain calm and go refill my cuppa and grab some sunflower seeds to nibble on. Go on. Get yours too. I will roll out our reading rug and find the page we are on in my copy of The Weekend Novelist by Robert J. Ray. Found it! We are on page 180. Grab your copy and read along.

Guidelines for Writing Plot Point One

Reader Question: Is it okay to take more time than normal to set ...

Use a chain of events to create the momentum for writing the scene containing plot point one. To help yourself follow along, create a list of the events leading to the end of Act One signaling the close of the scene. When we work with a chain of events, we can develop a deeper subplot. This can be carried on to the end of Act Two. We are thinking ahead here.

Chain of Events: Develop a chain of events leading up to plot point one. Dig as deep as you can into Act One for this.

Storyboard Your Plot Point One: Use your storyboarding techniques to sketch out the parts of the scene leading up to plot point one. Remember to factor in stage set-up, action, etc.

Timed Writing: Give yourself 15 minutes to write your plot point. Let the images and words flow.

Rewrite: You know how this works by now. Take a break. Think on it, then dig deeper and flesh it out.

I know this one seems shorter because it is. If the rest of the book is any indication, my posts may be shorter as we progress. Next time we will be looking at writing the scene at plot point two. Plot point two is the mini climax to the story that throws you into Act Three.

This is a post. It might be a short post
but mine is shorter.

Please remember that I am not trying to write this book for you word for word. I am skipping a lot of detail. I highly suggest you purchase the book and read between the lines.

Polish your sparkle and keep twirling.

Find joy. Be joy. Enjoy.

I’m always looking for new friends!
