Wait…? Isn’t an ally a good guy? Yes- but they are also one of the few characters in a story that has the power to push your MC down the correct path. This includes pulling them back from their “new” path (the Golden Banana) back to the Golden Carrot. This then forces our MC to face their flaws. Once the MC shifts their focus from the carrot to a lesser goal is the best point for the all-powerful ally to attack. This is when they take hold and shake the MC into reality. They force them to look deeper into the mirror and face their flaws. It is a swift slap upside the head and a kick down the path to get themselves together. Now, where you place this scene is up to you as the author. Earlier in, your reader can feel the misery your MC feels for the need to change. Later in the book, you can offer more tension for your readers. It all depends on the goal you are reaching for. As long as it happens before the final battle you are golden- carrot or banana.
We all need someone like that in our lives, an ally to keep us on our path. Do you have one? Do you want one? I would be more than happy to slap you upside the head and keep you on the right path. Or just slap you. Don’t mind me. I am coming out of a horrible illness.

Good Lawd! I swear if I hadn’t had the flu shot a few months back this would have killed-ed me. I was coughing so hard I swear I bruised my lungs. Gawd. I am on the mend, sipping hot tea from my cuppa and no nibbles cuz my appetite has left the building. This may help in my journey to be less fluffy- or-it will come back with a vengeance and I will regain the fluff. Who knows? Let’s get back to the book, Take Off Your Pants! by Libbie Hawker. Did you get a new cuppa for Christmas? I did! Go fill it with your new favorite (apple cinnamon tea) and grab a nibble if you are so inclined. All set? And…GO.
Plot: Girding the Loins

I always thought that line was funny- “Gird your loins.” How, exactly, do you do that? Just curious. Well, according to Ms. Hawker, this means the “final drive” or “renewed focus.” Um, okay. So, this is the no screwing around, nut up or shut up, time to fight. This is what happens once your Ally slaps your MC back into reality. This is when they become humble, refocused on their main goal, and finds the will to push forward.

“I don’t want the Golden Banana! It is of lesser value than the Carrot.
I need the Golden Carrot.”
– Or something like that.
Our MC is now aware of who they are, how to over come their flaws, and that the antagonist ain’t no joke. They will get their butt kicked if they aren’t properly prepared.

Now, how do you write that? No, really, how the heck do you write all that!? A quiet introspective scene where your MC reflects? A dramatic scene where they sacrifice something they value? Or go full on Disney and have a glorious sunrise filled with birds singing and trees reaching for the sky…No? Okay, you pick.
Which ever path you choose, make it clear to your reader that the MC has reached their “awakening.” Make sure they have put on their “hero shoes” and are firmly on the right path.

Polish your sparkle and keep twirling.
Find joy. Be joy. Enjoy.
I’m always looking for new friends!
