How Your Lifestyle Impacts Your Writing

Yupper, more problems we writers deal with.

Overcoming grant writer's block | Professional Grant WriterHave you ever sat down to work to only battle for each word? This can apply to a bunch of things, not just writing. We call this ‘writer’s block,’ but it’s more than that. Our lifestyle can impact our words and the desire to chase them. Sometimes when our creativity eludes us, there are other reasons.

There are times our brains and bodies need a break. When you are overly tired or ill your creativity can and will suffer. There is no shame in taking a nap or a vacation from the everyday struggles. That, my friends, is what vacations are for. Call it a ‘sick day’ if it makes you feel better.

Eating Turkey Does Not Really Make You Sleepy - Scientific AmericanOther things that can twist up your brain can include the things you consume. No, really. Have you ever eaten something and then needed a nap? Food can make you feel heavy, groggy, and have an impact on your work. This is your body screaming for help.

Celiac Disease Is Real ProductsI struggled with this very thing. With my doctor’s help I found I have Celiac Disease. I have an intolerance to wheat, barley, and rye. I now limit these foods and others that wear me down. I’m not saying you need to go on a diet. What I am pointing out is that the time of day you eat certain foods can affect your work. Limit junk food. Especially in the middle of the day when you still have things to get done. See it as a treat instead of a meal replacement.

Do not skip meals. Do not starve yourself- it will cause you to struggle mentally. Sleep. Build a real sleep schedule. Go to bed early and get up early. Find time to read. Exercise three to four times per week. Get outside and breathe in some fresh air.

How to Build a Support System | Road to Growth CounselingLook for support when you need it. Struggling to do it all yourself will only make that struggle more difficult. If your emotions are out of check it can have an effect on your work. Encourage yourself often but know when that isn’t enough. Reach out when you need it. Emotional health and stability are just as important as physical health. Both are needed for a successful work life and daily enjoyment.

Emotional Breakdowns

These happen. More often than you think. We all have had moments of doubt. Actually, that is why you haven’t read anything from me in a week or so. Doubt wrapped its spiny fingers around my brain and heart and squeezed. Hard. Self Doubt: Stop Doubting Yourself and Start Living! | Wholeness Haven“Why?’ you ask. Simple, I’m human and when others are critical of things I do or don’t do, it hurts. I’m not limiting my struggles to my online world. Real life, face to face events cause me to struggle as well. But I know how to, well, fix seems like the wrong word here. I think I know how to move forward but not fix my struggles.

Here is a list of things you can do if you are struggling like me:

  • Exercise
  • Eat good food
  • Read- this blog, personal development books, and things that bring you joy
  • Work on improving your self-confidence
  • Look at the criticisms you have received- look and learn, but do not build a house and live there. Let them go.
  • Go to those you trust for encouragement. Set up a weekly/bi-monthly get together. Have a cuppa and chat about…everything.

Take a breath. Take a nap. Turn on your favorite music (Blue October). Slip into a warm bath and take some time for you. It’s okay. Those of us who care will be here waiting, holding your seat at the table. But don’t take too long to come back- we miss and need you too.

Until next time, friends…

Polish your sparkle and keep twirling.

Find joy. Be joy. Enjoy.

I’m always looking for new friends!

I am...interesting. I am a writer, dreamer, mom, wife, veteran, friend, villain, and the wearer of many hats, but I don't look good in hats- go figure. I LOVE TO WRITE. I want to tell stories. I want to make you laugh, cry, and scare the crap out of you, and make you ask "why the hell did you do that?" I want to make you cheer my characters on or want to shake the crap out of them for things they say and/or do. I want to bring you along for the ride. Ready? Set?...READ!!!
