Step Four: Redirect the Energy of the Resistance

SCREEEEECH!!!!

Change the direction or focus of your attention. Dwelling on the resistance that is keeping you hostage is a waste of time. If you see yourself as a problem solver than you will find yourself finding new problems to solve. If you begin to see yourself as someone who can see the positive things in your past, and your future as an awesome adventure, then appreciate this outlook. Feeling guilty about the past or time wasted is another form of resistance. Write about what you have learned from the struggle. Write about or journal the techniques you have learned that help YOU through resistance. We are all unique, so what works for one person may not work for another. Search, try, try again until you find the techniques that work best for you.

It’s a start.

Wow! That was profound and confusing. Don’t worry, we will figure it all out in the end. All right, you know the routine by now, so get your copy of Around the Writer’s Block by Rosanne Bane and dust off the cookie crumbs from our last visit. Sneak to the breakroom or kitchen and refill for the fourth time your cuppa and grab a nibble or six from the cabinet. What? Don’t judge me. I’m a bit peckish this morning.

Come on, Sunshine!

Come on, sunshine, we must find opportunities to reward ourselves, right?! Let’s jump in friend. Join me on page 240 and tuck in for the wisdom of Rosanne Bane.

Smarter than the average whale…? Huh? Well, basically we are as trainable as the standard killer whale. Cool! Science shows that whales have complex brains, social skills (can’t say the same for some people), and a vocal system that appears to qualify as a language. Once again, cool. Now, you cannot coerce a four-ton killer whale

Ooooo, purdy.

to do anything it does not want to do. Why would you think you can do that to yourself? When training a whale, they ignore all the bad things and reward every good. Even if it is by accident. It is kind of like training my Frankie to not be a total booger. I reward him when he sits and ignore (as best I can) when he jumps up my leg. Just so you know. It is kinda working. Slow and steady.

More pictures? Lady, I was asleep. Geesh.

Anyway, back to the lesson. Okay, so when we follow the first three steps, Recognize, Relax, and Respect, redirection can happen spontaneously. Rosanne describes Resistance as a form of tug-of-war, when Resistance releases its hold it also releases the energy it has had trapped in its grasp all along. When you have respected the process of it all you can start taking advantage of the energy now available.

Take a step back and review the answers you gave back in the Respect post. Once you have done that you can follow the list of actions below:

  • Get what you need before taking the risk.
  • Reassure yourself.
  • Make the time, get support, research, and get a commitment from yourself.
  • Work through your fears, slowly and steadily.
  • Establish acceptable levels of risk.
  • Accomplish a task that can prepare you for the writing ahead.
  • Remove any obstacles that may be in your way.
