…I feel like we have lost the true meaning of the Holiday behind the sales pages in the Sunday paper.
We barely make it through Halloween before we are subjected to early on set guilt from ads showing us ALL the people we HAVE to buy for. And then…people get ticked at me when I tell them that I do not want a single gift. What I want is to remove the pressure from you. I don’t NEED anything and if I did, I am at the age where I will carry my happy ass to Wally World – or where ever- and get it myself. I’m not going to wait for someone to ask me what I want from Santa to get it.
I think the worst idea on the planet is the “Gag Gift.” Yes! Let’s spend $10-$20 on a trash gift…cuz that’s where it’s going to be before the night is out- In. The. Trash. So, basically you are spending money to throw away…? What?
Wanna know what I want for Christmas? I want your time. I want you and I to make a date to get together for coffee (cuz coffee is the best thing EVER). I want to spend time with you. I want to know how you are and what plans you have made or goals you have set. That’s what I want for Christmas and everyday ever. I want to see you smile and hear you laugh or lament about something. I want to share advice and receive some in return. I do not need boxes and bows, candles or clothes…I need you.
I do, however, believe in creating a magical memory for children. But, let’s also teach them that love and kindness are free and everyone deserves that everyday of their lives. Happiness will never be found at the bottom of a shiny box. Happiness and joy are found within each other.
Be the must have gift this Christmas. Be the reason someone smiles or laughs. See value in people beyond the packages they carry.
