Tomorrow you will be watching parades and grilling dogs and throwing back beers, but do you know why? Not sure? Well, check out the seven photos I posted above. This is my family. These are just a few of the members of my family that wore a uniform so that you could sit on your porch and relax. One of the men in these photos died in combat. His sacrifice and the sacrifice his family made have ensured you have a peaceful BBQ.
These photos are of my grandfather, grandmother, me, the Hubs, the Hubs’ father, a distant ancestor, and the Hubs’ uncle. In my family, we can trace our lineage in combat for this country all the way back to the Civil War. The Hubs? Well, it is quite clear his family has had a long-standing tradition of service to America as well.
In our house, we understand the meaning of Memorial Day. We will cover our hearts when the Anthem plays. We will bow our heads in a moment of silence for the men and women who sacrificed everything for us. We will fly our flags with pride and in honor to those still out there holding down the fort. I thank these men and women who don’t have the day off. While I am burning hot dogs they will be going about their daily business as if it were just a normal Monday. But I know. I know what it means. I know why it’s important. And I thank you all for your service.
So, while you are surrounded by family and friends remember that there are families missing members who have given all. There are service men and women overseas away from home and friends who are deployed in war-zones. Take a moment to raise a glass in honor to all who have, are, and will serve this amazing country.
Be kind to someone today. It may be the highlight of their day.
